An inclusive children's book highlighting deaf and hard of hearing characters!

I’m so glad you came by. My name is Billie. I’m four years old and I am also Hard of Hearing. I have bilateral hearing loss due to Microtia. Microtia is a congenital condition of a little or missing outer ear. I wear my BAHA to be able to hear the world around me.

I go to a school with all my other friends that are also Deaf or Hard of Hearing, but they don’t all wear BAHAs to hear like me. Some of my friends wear behind the ear hearing aids or cochlear implants. I even have one friend that does not wear anything to hear, but we all have one thing in common... we are all SUPER HEARo’S!

Microtia Awareness Day is November 9th, but I celebrate my Super HEARo abilities with my friends EVERYDAY! I wear my cape sometimes so people know I’m a Super HEARo!

My superpowers are kindness and acceptance. Together we will discover communication repair strategies, self-advocacy, and how to bring everyone's differences together!

Zeina

مرحبا اسمي زينة.
That says, “Hi, my name is Zeina.” You see I’m practicing writing and speaking Arabic. That’s the language my family uses at home. Do you speak a different language at home than school? I think it’s cool. I learn all about where my family comes from and then I get to teach my friends and teacher. Ms. Jessica will even celebrate some of my holidays in school, how neat is that? What is cooler than that, I get to learn about my friend’s holidays and celebrations too. Ms. Jessica tells us all of the time that the more we learn about our differences, the more we will learn how we are all the same.

¡Me llamo Mario! Yo soy un estudiante en clase de Senorita Jessica! Soy de Honduras. Soy sordo en mis dos oídos. Uso implantes cocleares para escuchar. Es posible que necesite a mi maestra del habla para ayudarme con mi impedimento del habla, no la necesito para levantar cosas pesadas. ¿Ves mis músculos?

Hi, all, are you there?
It’s hard for me to see sometimes, so I have to rely on my hearing. One of my most favorite games to play is Marco Polo. Have you played that before? I have 2 special teachers that help me learn. One is Ms. Jessica, who helps me with my hearing and the other is a teacher that helps me with my vision.

I bet you can’t catch me! Ready to race? I’m fast as lightning with my wheels. You know what I struggle with? Small spaces and stairs. I’m so glad so many places, like my school have ramps and wide paths for people like me. I can slide down the slide just like all of my friends. My physical therapist helps me do some of the same things my other friends do.

Hi, I'm Malcolm. I have a unilateral hearing loss (meaning a hearing loss in one ear) and due to my tactile sensitivity, I don't wear any amplification. People say my Autism makes me neurodiverse, I just like to think it's what makes me smart.
